Linocut book
Linocut by Nick Morley

Nick Morley’s ‘Linocut’ is a favorite for artists with a bit of art experience. This is the first book I picked up needing to refresh my linocut printmaking skills.  It covers the basic printmaking from explaining assorted surfaces, cutting tools, in-depth description of paper, different paper types, hand printing to printing on a press, printmaking inks and handling. He shares great tips on how to spot printing errors to how to handle & extend inks, as well as advanced techniques. Nick shares over 300 photos and chapters are interspersed with reviews of inspirational printmaking artists. Written in easy to follow and simple language, it’ll make a great companion to your printing journey.  A4 size with 179 pages it is also good value for money. Nick is an illustrator and designer and his printmaking artwork can be found at www.linocutboy.com.

'Beginners Guide to Linocut,' (2019) and 'Learning Linocut' (2011) by Susan Yeates

Published by Search Press Ltd 2019

96 pages, soft back

Learning to linocut
Beginner’s Guide to Linocut by Susan Yeates 96 pages, soft back (2019)
Learning to linocut
Learning Linocut. A comprehensive guide to the art of relief printing through linocut (2011). 104 pages, soft back

Susan provides simple step by step pictorial instructions. She writes from an educator perspective and the exercises would work great for workshops or home activities for young persons. Her illustrations are bold and simple. She shares brillant linocut creative ideas for special gifts (prints, cards and bags).  From the two books pictured here, would recommend 2019 edition simply as its better thought out and the quality of the photographs and illustrations are sharper. Nevertheless, both are a good read. Susan’s work and educational resources can be found www.susanyeates.co.uk

'Printmaking for Beginners' (2nd edition) by Jane Stobart

Published by A & C Black. 2005. Soft back.

****

Printmaking for Beginners includes introduction to linocut printing
Printmaking for Beginners (2005), 128 pages soft back

Luckily picked up this book in a second-hand sale years ago, it’s a good general handbook giving a brief overview to wide range of printmaking techniques: monotype, relief, intaglio, collagraph, screen-printing and lithography. Each chapter gives concise insight into each technique from equipment set up to printing process with accompanying pictorial instructions and photographs of prints. Summaries are well-structured and easy to read which reflects Jane’s teaching background in printmaking. The book is slightly larger than A5 with 128 pages and a decent guide to deciding which method of printmaking you wish to pursue or enhance your art practice. The size of the photographs, however, doesn’t capture the beauty of each artwork but will inspire you to explore artists further. Jane Stobart is an award-winning printmaker & artist and has written other books. Her artworks can be found www.axlearts.com
